New year, new home<\/a>. How exciting! Whether\nyou\u2019re currently building, in the process of looking, or getting ready to do\nso, how to integrate today\u2019s best looks into the home is probably on your mind.\nThankfully, Elle Decor<\/em><\/a> is here with some of\nthe top home design trends of 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indoor furniture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of furniture trends that are coming to the forefront this year and which would look great in a new home. House Beautiful<\/em> recently highlighted \u201cGrandmillenial style\u201d\u2014a look that is \u201chaving a moment,\u201d Ariel Okin of Ariel Okin Interiors<\/a> tells Elle Decor. \u201cThe look is traditional design with a twist: blending elements of classic design like chinoiserie, scallops, natural fiber rugs, topiaries, and more, with a contemporary edge (Think: modern art and clean lined furniture.).\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furniture with rounded edges and European-inspired details are also \u201cin,\u201d according to top designers. \u201cGerman and Italian influences can be found in the sloping arms of couches, knife-edge welts, metal legs, and more,\u201d said Marie Flanigan of Marie Flanigan Interiors<\/a>. \u201cI am even seeing traditional furniture brands embracing the trend, offering European silhouettes and features for the first time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rounded edges are a throwback to an earlier\nera, but look great in modern silhouettes. \u201cThe 80\u2019s are having a big comeback\nright now, and while most of the trends from that era are hard to swallow, the\ntubular forms we\u2019re seeing in furniture harken back to that time and can be\nreally fun and modern if done tastefully,\u201d said Christine Markatos Lowe\nof Markatos Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other big trend in furniture for the new\nhome, according to Elle Decor, is not surrounding a style or shape, but rather\na material\u2014and it\u2019s one families will love. \u201cPerformance fabrics are a\nmust\u2014they have changed the way we live by making every room functional for the\nentire family,\u201d said Lonni Paul of Lonni Paul\nDesign<\/a>.\n\u201cThey could be used in the messiest of family rooms, but also in luxurious\nliving and dining rooms while maintaining a fashionable aesthetic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wallcoverings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wallpaper has been a growing trend over\nseveral years. Personally, we\u2019re big fans of the peel-and-variety that allows\nyou to take it down and switch it out as often as you\u2019d like. But, if you\u2019re\nready to make a longer-term commitment, think \u201csingle-print drama.\u201d This is the\ntrend Scot Meacham Wood of Decorist<\/a> loves for 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat could be more simple, yet incite more\ndrama and style, than a room covered in the same print from floor to ceiling?\nInspired by some of the overtly glamorous\u2014and timelessly chic\u2014spaces brought to\nlife by design icons such as Gloria Vanderbilt and Lee Radziwill,\u201d he said to\nElle Decor, \u201ctoday\u2019s bolder design enthusiasts are turning \u2018Why didn’t I think\nof that?\u2019 into \u2018I want to DO that!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the best grays will remain classic, there is a trend toward Earth tones for the new year and new home. \u201cSay goodbye to the cool tones that have ruled for so many years,\u201d said Marika Meyer of Meyer<\/a> Interiors<\/a>. \u201cShades of chocolate brown, wine, olive green, and yellow ochre are all taking over in homes. We love substituting these warm, natural colors for a neutral on the sofa or walls.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And don\u2019t forget about blue. The hue that is “suggestive of the sky at dusk\u201d is Pantone\u2019s Color of the Year<\/a> for 2020. When used in the home, Classic Blue is \u201ceasily applied across so many different materials, textures and finishes\u201d and has the potential to “inject creative confidence into interiors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bathrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boring is out. It\u2019s time to inject a little\nfun and drama into this space. \u201cBathrooms are a great place to experiment and\nhave fun with color, materials, and\/or wallpaper,\u201d said Bailey Austin of Bailey Austin Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re seeing this trend play out in smaller\nspaces like powder baths. If you think a half bath is too compact for high\ndrama, take a listen to what The Spruce<\/a> had to say, and check\nout this stunning pic<\/a>: \u201cIn your powder\nroom or any other small space, color is the quickest and easiest way to\ncreate instant style<\/a>. The beauty of a small room is that you are\nnot trying to make it look larger because it’s not possible and totally\npointless. Instead, focus on choosing bold or dark colors that you’d never\nuse in a small room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone is going green! But not the faux\ntype of green we\u2019ve seen so much of in recent years. \u201cGoing green with nice,\nreal indoor plants helps give personality and another layer to a space,\u201d said\nLinda Hayslett of L.H. Designs<\/a>. \u201cI can always spot a faux\nplant in a design. It may be great initially, but the character of a plant\ncomes from how it organically grows. And faux plants will always remain the\nsame and eventually get dusty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The added benefit to having real plants:\nthey\u2019re good for your health, both mental and physical. They\u2019ve been shown to\ndo everything from boost your mood and productivity, to reduce stress and\nfatigue, to clean the air that you breathe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outdoors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your new home has a patio or yard, you\u2019ll want to take note of a few outdoor trends for 2020. Looking for furniture for this space? Rattan and wicker are back! \u201cRattan\/wicker is having a resurgence; it warmly reminds me of my childhood and has evolved in fresh and exciting ways whether in chairs, tables, or lighting, it is the perfect layer to balance modern and traditional style,\u201d said Nicole Fuller of Nicole Fuller Interiors<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of going to the expense of building an outdoor fireplace or going with a fireplace table, go the way of the fire bowl. \u201cSculptural fire bowls become a functional piece of art, whether it’s gas-fired or hold wooden fires. These beautiful sculptural bowls are simple to install and simple to use,\u201d said Janice Parker of Janice Parker of Janice Parker Landscape Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
